Sultanpur Lodhi — Kapurthala, Punjab
A guide to the Gurudwaras, heritage sites, and sacred places of this historic city.
Sultanpur Lodhi is home to several Gurudwaras and heritage sites connected to the life of Sahib Shri Guru Nanak Ji and the broader Sikh historical tradition. The Gurudwaras are open to visitors of all faiths. Please dress modestly, cover your head, and remove footwear before entering any Gurudwara. Confirm current timings from local/official sources before your visit.
1. Gurudwara Sri Ber Sahib
Significance: The most revered Gurudwara in Sultanpur Lodhi, built at the sacred spot where Sahib Shri Guru Nanak Ji performed his daily prayers. The ancient Ber (jujube) tree at the site, from which the Gurudwara takes its name, is treated with great reverence.
Visitor Relevance: The centrepiece of any pilgrimage to Sultanpur Lodhi. Home to a Sarovar (sacred pool) and regular Langar (community kitchen meal, open to all).
2. Kali Bein
Significance: The sacred rivulet where, according to tradition, Sahib Shri Guru Nanak Ji bathed and received the divine light that led to the founding of the Sikh faith. The site of the Mool Mantar’s first declaration.
Visitor Relevance: A peaceful walk along the restored rivulet. Best visited in the early morning. The restoration story is itself an inspiration — a community environmental effort led by faith.
3. Gurudwara Sri Hatt Sahib
Significance: Traditionally associated with the Hatt (shop/stall) where Sahib Shri Guru Nanak Ji is said to have served — distributing grain and goods to the community while in service at the Modikhana (grain store).
Visitor Relevance: An important stop on the Sultanpur Lodhi pilgrimage circuit, close to other key Gurudwaras in the city centre.
According to local tradition and widely cited accounts.
4. Gurudwara Sri Kothri Sahib
Significance: Traditionally associated with the Kothri (room or chamber) that served as Guru Sahib Ji’s working space at the Modikhana — the grain store where he worked under Nawab Daulat Khan Lodi.
Visitor Relevance: A meaningful stop for pilgrims interested in the historical context of Guru Sahib Ji’s service in Sultanpur Lodhi.
5. Gurudwara Sri Sant Ghat Sahib
Significance: Located near the banks of the Kali Bein, this Gurudwara is associated with the ghat (bathing steps/riverbank) traditionally connected to Guru Sahib Ji’s early morning prayers and bathing rituals at the Kali Bein.
Visitor Relevance: Often included in the Sultanpur Lodhi pilgrimage circuit, near the Kali Bein walk.
6. Gurudwara Sri Antaryamta Sahib
Significance: ‘Antaryamta’ refers to the inner witness — the all-knowing. This Gurudwara is associated with an account in which Guru Sahib Ji demonstrated his knowledge of hidden things, traditionally related to his time of service in Sultanpur Lodhi.
Visitor Relevance: Part of the extended Sultanpur Lodhi pilgrimage circuit for devoted pilgrims.
