Kali Bein

The sacred rivulet of Sultanpur Lodhi — where Sahib Shri Guru Nanak Ji bathed in the waters and received the divine light that would transform the world.

What is Kali Bein?

Kali Bein (also written as Kali Bein or Kali Wain) is a seasonal stream that flows through the Kapurthala and Sultanpur Lodhi area of Punjab. Historically, it was a significant local waterway. Today it is known worldwide primarily for its spiritual significance in Sikh history and for a remarkable 20th-century environmental restoration story.

The Spiritual Significance

According to Sikh tradition, during the years that Sahib Shri Guru Nanak Ji lived and served in Sultanpur Lodhi, he would come each morning before dawn to bathe in the Kali Bein and offer his prayers. One morning, when he went to bathe in the rivulet, he disappeared beneath the waters and was not seen for three days. His family and companions searched and feared he had drowned.

When Guru Sahib Ji emerged from the waters on the third day, he was transformed. The first words he spoke were the Mool Mantar — the foundational declaration of the Sikh faith. He also proclaimed: “Na koi Hindu, na koi Musalman” — articulating the universality of the divine message he had received. This event is understood in Sikh tradition as the moment of his formal divine calling and mission.

“Ik Onkar — there is One Creator of all that exists.”

This account is drawn from Sikh Janamsakhis (traditional biographical accounts) and widely recorded Sikh tradition. It is presented here as tradition records it.

The Restoration of Kali Bein

By the late 20th century, Kali Bein had become severely polluted — choked with waste and sewage from surrounding settlements. In the early 2000s, Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, a Sikh environmental activist and leader from the region, launched a remarkable community-driven restoration effort. Thousands of volunteers participated over several years to clean the 160-km rivulet, remove waste, restore its banks, and bring it back to a flowing, clean state.

The restoration of Kali Bein became internationally recognized as a landmark example of community-led environmental action inspired by faith and service. It demonstrated that the Sikh value of Seva (selfless service) could be applied powerfully to environmental causes — and the project received widespread attention from environmental organizations, government bodies, and the media worldwide.
