Best Time to Visit

October to March is generally the most comfortable period for visiting Punjab in terms of weather. The days are pleasant and cool, and travel is comfortable.

Gurpurab of Guru Nanak Dev Ji (celebrated in October/November, date varies by Sikh calendar) is the most significant time to visit — the city is especially vibrant, and large numbers of pilgrims attend. Plan accommodation and transport well in advance during this period.

April to June can be very hot (40°C+). If visiting in summer, start early in the morning.

For exact dates of Gurpurabs and special occasions, please check from official Sikh calendar sources or the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). Exact dates change each year.

Visitor Tips & Etiquette

  • 🧣 Cover your head: Head covering is required inside all Gurudwaras. Scarves, dupattas, and bandanas are usually available at the entrance for visitors who need them.
  • 👟 Remove footwear: Shoes must be removed before entering any Gurudwara. Shoe storage is provided.
  • 👗 Modest dress: Please dress modestly. Avoid sleeveless tops or very short clothing as a mark of respect.
  • 🚭 No smoking or alcohol: Strictly prohibited on and near Gurudwara premises.
  • 📷 Photography: Photography may be restricted inside prayer halls. Look for signs and when in doubt, ask. The Kali Bein and outer areas of Gurudwaras are generally fine for photography.
  • 🥘 Langar (community meal): Available at most Gurudwaras and open to all visitors regardless of faith. Typically served in a large community hall — follow the system quietly and respectfully.
  • 👴 Elderly visitors & children: The terrain is relatively flat and accessible. Most Gurudwaras have ramps or accessible entrances. Carry water during summer months.
  • 🌿 Kali Bein: Please do not dispose of any waste near the rivulet. Keep the area clean and treat it with the same respect as you would a Gurudwara.
